C\u2019est l\u00e0, dans la <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.museocanova.it\/\">Gypsotheca<\/a><\/em>, la plus grande d\u2019Europe, que sont expos\u00e9es les \u00e9bauches de cr\u00e9ations telles que <em>Les Gr\u00e2ces<\/em>, <em>V\u00e9nus et Mars<\/em>, <em>Danseuse aux cymbales<\/em> et un buste de Napol\u00e9on. Originaire de Possagno, le sculpteur y fit \u00e9riger \u00e0 ses frais une \u00e9glise paroissiale, le Temple (dans lequel se trouve son tombeau, tandis que son c\u0153ur repose \u00e0 Venise, dans la Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari), admirable synth\u00e8se n\u00e9oclassique d\u2019emprunts au Parth\u00e9non d\u2019Ath\u00e8nes et au Panth\u00e9on de Rome. Le temple de Canova est accessible en quelques minutes \u00e0 pied par une avenue qui part \u00e0 droite du mus\u00e9e.    <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<p>Antonio Canova a beaucoup voyag\u00e9 en Europe et a \u00e9t\u00e9 re\u00e7u plusieurs fois \u00e0 Paris par Napol\u00e9on, qui admirait sa franchise.<sup data-fn=\"f3975bc3-baf5-4404-8f3a-57a48947d95f\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#f3975bc3-baf5-4404-8f3a-57a48947d95f\" id=\"f3975bc3-baf5-4404-8f3a-57a48947d95f-link\">1<\/a><\/sup> Nous proposons ici quelques courts passages de lettres \u00e9crites par le critique d\u2019art fran\u00e7ais Antoine Quatrem\u00e8re de Quincy, ami de l\u2019artiste de Possagno:<\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p> <\/p>\n<cite>                                                                                                                                                             Londres, 6 juin 1818<br>&nbsp;<br>Mon Ami,<br>Ce que vous m\u2019aviez \u00e9crit de Londres, pendant votre s\u00e9jour en cette ville, sur les sculptures du temple de Minerve \u00e0 Ath\u00e8nes, sculptures dont l\u2019Europe devra la jouissance et la conservation au z\u00e8le ardent et \u00e9clair\u00e9 de milord comte d\u2019Elgin, et ce que vous m\u2019aviez \u00e9crit depuis votre retour \u00e0 Rome, fit na\u00eetre en moi, je ne puis le dissimuler, une double impression qu\u2019il m\u2019\u00e9toit assez difficile de m\u2019expliquer. C\u2019\u00e9toit un sentiment tout \u00e0 la fois de confiance et de doute. [\u2026]<br><br>&nbsp;<br>                                                                                                                                                             Londres, 8 juin 1818<br><br>Mon Ami,<br>[\u2026]<br>On peut donc se persuader que le sentiment seul de l\u2019harmonie g\u00e9n\u00e9rale prescrivit \u00e0 la d\u00e9coration le genre saillant de ces m\u00e9topes. La distance d\u2019o\u00f9 on les voyait dut en r\u00e9duire en moiti\u00e9 la dimension, et en affoiblir l\u2019effet, qui n\u00e9anmoins ne put \u00eatre que tr\u00e8s-piquant. Ces groupes, encadr\u00e9s comme ils l\u2019\u00e9taoient, devoient paro\u00eetre comme des esp\u00e8ces de cam\u00e9es saillants, auxquels cette saillie m\u00eame donnoit une valeur qui dispensoit l\u2019\u0153il d\u2019en scruter de trop pr\u00e8s les d\u00e9tails. [\u2026]<br><br><br>                                                                                                                                                             Londres, le 12 juin 1818<br><br>[\u2026]<br>[Dans les figures nues du fronton du Parth\u00e9non] l\u2019union de l\u2019expression ost\u00e9ologique qui est le principe du mouvement, avec l\u2019expression musculaire ou celle des chairs qui compl\u00e8te la v\u00e9rit\u00e9, imprime au tout ensemble un caract\u00e8re combin\u00e9 de force et de souplesse, de fermet\u00e9 et de souplesse, qui fait respirer, vivre et remuer les figures. [\u2026]<br>&nbsp;<br>                                                                                                                                                            Londres, le 14 juin 1818<br><br>[\u2026] l\u2019artiste qui fit le mieux des dieux, fut celui dont le style c\u2019\u00e9toit le plus agrandi par les combinaisons de l\u2019imitation id\u00e9ale. Car la diff\u00e9rence de l\u2019imitation dite naturelle \u00e0 l\u2019imitation dite id\u00e9ale, est que celle-ci repr\u00e9sente <em>l\u2019homme<\/em>, lorsque l\u2019autre ne repr\u00e9sente qu\u2019<em>un homme<\/em>. [&#8230;]<sup data-fn=\"2eb5548f-90fe-4b73-96bb-acc908500a7d\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#2eb5548f-90fe-4b73-96bb-acc908500a7d\" id=\"2eb5548f-90fe-4b73-96bb-acc908500a7d-link\">2<\/a><\/sup><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n<p>Le critique d\u2019art revient sur son ami en 1834 pour publier un livre, <em>Canova et ses ouvrages ou m\u00e9moires historiques sur la vie et les travaux de ce c\u00e9l\u00e8bre artiste<\/em>:<\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p> <\/p>\n<cite>Il faut dire, en effet, que Canova eut le privil\u00e8ge, peut-\u00eatre sans exemple, de jouir pendant sa vie, d\u2019une renomm\u00e9e qu\u2019on peut appeler universelle, et telle, qu\u2019aucun des plus grands talens modernes n\u2019en a r\u00e9ellement obtenu une semblable. [\u2026] Mais ce que Canova eut de particulier, c\u2019est qu\u2019il fut dans le cas de refuser presque autant d\u2019ouvrages, qu\u2019il lui fut donn\u00e9 d\u2019en produire&nbsp;; et pourtant il n\u2019y a peut-\u00eatre point de capitale qui ne tire de vanit\u00e9 de quelque \u0153uvre de son ciseau. [\u2026] Antoine Canova naquit en 1757, le 1<sup>er<\/sup> novembre, \u00e0 Possagno (dans la province de Tr\u00e9vise), gros village riche et par la fertilit\u00e9 de la terre et par le commerce des laines. [\u2026] D\u00e8s l\u2019\u00e2ge de cinq ans, on lui mit en main la masse et le ciseau pour travailler la pierre. L\u2019enfant manifesta d\u00e8s-lors une extr\u00eame aptitude \u00e0 ce travail. [\u2026] Il y a avoit chez Canova une vivacit\u00e9 extraordinaire d\u2019imagination, et une capacit\u00e9 extraordinaire d\u2019ex\u00e9cution, \u00e0 quoi se joignoit une \u00e9gale passion de s\u2019instruire et de r\u00e9parer, par la lecture et l\u2019\u00e9tude, le manque d\u2019une instruction, que les circonstances de ses premi\u00e8res ann\u00e9es ne lui avoient pas permis d\u2019acqu\u00e9rir. [\u2026] L\u2019admiration dont la Madeleine p\u00e9nitente fut alors ici l\u2019objet [\u2026] semblait tenir de l\u2019effet d\u2019un miracle. [\u2026] On lui trouvoit une pieuse d\u00e9cence dans sa nudit\u00e9, une savante v\u00e9rit\u00e9 dans les nuds, mais surtout une affection ind\u00e9finissable de douleur religieuse, dans ce visage qui cesse d\u2019\u00eatre du marbre, et qui pleure. [\u2026] Telle fut, nonobstant quelques observations de d\u00e9tail, l\u2019effet du premier ouvrage de Canova.<sup data-fn=\"e16a2e09-b9f7-42e8-9bae-bc68945853da\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#e16a2e09-b9f7-42e8-9bae-bc68945853da\" id=\"e16a2e09-b9f7-42e8-9bae-bc68945853da-link\">3<\/a><\/sup><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n<p>Une autre correspondance (conserv\u00e9e \u00e0 la biblioth\u00e8que de Bassano del Grappa), entre Canova et son \u00e9l\u00e8ve prometteuse Marianna Pascoli Angeli, a permis de reconstituer la biographie de cette peintre n\u00e9oclassique, un cas rare de femme ayant fray\u00e9 son chemin dans l\u2019art entre le XVIIIe et le XIXe si\u00e8cle : l\u2019historienne de l\u2019art Paola Bonifacio, originaire de Conegliano, a \u00e9crit un texte radiophonique \u00e0 ce sujet \u00e0 l\u2019automne 2023.
